The 2008 Proof Gold Eagle was issued as a collectible version of the popular bullion coin. The US Mint sold the coins directly to collectors in one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one tenth ounce sizes. The coins were packaged and sold individually or as a complete 4 Coin Set.

Because of some unfortunate timing, the coins were priced at a very high premium to the price of gold. As a result, sales of the coins were slow throughout the year, which led to lower mintages.
